In the old TV show ‘Blankety Blank’ celebrities were invited to fill in the blanks in a given phrase…
I continue to enjoy the Marsh Family. Their most recent ‘Lockdown World’ shows their skills and creativity both lyrically and musically.
I’ve been playing Blankety Blank with ‘____down world’. Here are six of the ‘blank-down worlds’, where some of us sometimes live:
Lockdown world: We’ve lived there for some time. For many it’s as if the things we want to do are locked away. Some of us are good at accepting, others are anxious or fed up…
Countdown world: In this world we’re just waiting …. Life’s a countdown to the holiday, the big event… or the surgery, the wedding, the birth of a baby….
Breakdown world: We aren’t coping. Our world’s really difficult. We’re at breaking point in relationships, in our families… Life’s badly damaged and we can’t see a way to mend it.
Showdown world: We’re angry, frustrated, confrontational – or just very competitive. We want to take on the world. Every day is a challenge that we face head-on – and try to win, whatever the cost.
Putdown world: In this world we’re cynical, hardened. We dismiss people, their efforts, their beliefs or ideas. We believe conspiracy theories, and destroy without being able to re-create.
Eiderdown world: We stay in bed all day (literally or metaphorically). Pulling the duvet over our head we ignore the rest of the world.
This morning I read: ‘As you do not know the path of the wind, or how the body is formed in the mother’s womb, so you cannot understand the work of God, the Maker of all things.’ (Ecclesiastes 11:5)
As I find myself in different ‘blank-down worlds’ there’s so much I don’t understand. Today I choose to trust this God, who is present in all worlds.
And if you have alternative ‘blank-down world’ please let me know…
