No Longer Slaves

I’m no longer a slave to fear
I am a child of God

At church this morning we shall sing these words repeatedly stating that our relationship with God takes way our fear. It’s simple yet profound message, speaking of my identity as God’s child that brings freedom and strength.

You unravel me with a melody
You surround me with a song
Of deliverance from my enemies
Till all my fears are gone.

I’m no longer a slave to fear
I am a child of God

In our church there are parents and pensioners, folks with different backgrounds with concerns about health, employment, families, finances… We shall sing of God’s personal intervention in our internal anxieties and our external adversities that can remove fear and bring peace. The discovery, realisation of God’s intimate concern for and involvement in our personal worries brings a new security and hope.

From my mother’s womb you have chosen me
Love has called my name
I’ve been born again into a family
Your blood flows through my veins

I’m no longer a slave to fear
I am a child of God

Being part of God’s family isn’t just a nice idea; it has huge implications. It means as individuals our whole lives have meaning and purpose. We have identity; we have value; we belong. God the caring parent, wants the best for his children, embraces us with love and reassurance, and has a plan that we can live in with courage, peace and gratitude.

You split the sea so I could walk right through it
My fears were drowned in perfect love
You rescued me so I could stand and sing
I am a child of God

The Israelites were slaves in Egypt. God’s power in parting the sea brings them from painful, controlling slavery to safe, empowering, reassuring, liberty.

The loving Parent-God today is also strong Controller-God who can bring about apparently impossible changes, removing obstacles, defeating enemies, and creating freedom and a new identity. God’s presence and power brings His purpose and peace because… I am a child of God.

  1. It seems to me that he’s singing in such an appropriate context. I guess that prisoners can understand things like fear, freedom and love in ways that you and I will never experience, Nancy.

  2. Hi, Malcolm. I am catching up on my reading. Although you wrote this three days ago, I needed to read this today. Thank you for sharing. Isaiah 41:10 is one of my favorite Scriptures. I needed that encouragement today. I will make reference to your post today in my post as it was encouragement for me. Thanks again and be blessed.
