Unfinished

Unfinished Business: When I lived in Surrey smart-suited business men walked to the train-station each morning, travelling up to London, reading their newspapers in silence.

One gent read one page of his paper, screwed it up, and threw it out the window. He read another and threw that one out the window. He did this each day.

Eventually one brave commuter broke the silence: ‘Excuse me, old chap, why are you doing that?’

‘To keep the elephants away!’

The questioner was puzzled: ‘But there aren’t any elephants round here?!’

‘That’s because mine’s a frightfully good method!’

Unfinished Race: We’re on holiday for a few days in North Norfolk. We went to church in King’s Lynn; our friend June is the minister.

She talked about ‘Pressing on’ in the race of life… moving on from past difficulties… being strong when engaging with current challenges… travelling together, supporting and encouraging each other…

June’s – St Paul’s – ‘Pressing on’ points towards the finishing line of an unfinished race.

Unfinished Jigsaw: Yesterday afternoon we visited Sandringham, the Norfolk home of King Charles and Queen Camilla. Because they’re not living there at present the house is open to visitors.

We saw their dining room with the table set, the sitting room where they watch television. Helpful, informed guides explained how the household works.

On one table was an unfinished jigsaw. The queen had started it earlier in the year and wants to complete it at Christmas.

Unfinished Love: In the eveningon TV we learnt of Harry’s Hydrocephalus Awareness Trust (Harry’s HAT), a small charity, which ‘works tirelessly to make life better for children with hydrocephalus… and the families who love and care for them’.

I like the stories of Jesus because he could heal the sick, calm the storm, solve problems, fix things. Harry’s HAT reminds me that not everything can be cured or fixed.

Life’s imperfect, an unfinished business… race… jigsaw. Harry’s HAT – and Jesus – point to a love that’s tireless, ongoing, all-embracing… and unfinished.

  1. My husband’s sister and husband lived at Kings Lynn for during the late 1980s, when he worked for Dow. We went to church with them there, but I can’t remember which one. We were surprised that the hymnals had words but no music in them. They also took us to Sandringham. Lois played with a local town band and they return there regularly from California, where they live now.
