And Through It All

On Tuesday I had to pick up grandson-Luca from his dance club on other side of town. It usually takes about quarter of an hour. On this occasion I found myself stuck in stationary traffic.

I was irritated; I thought of possible alternative routes; I’d like to have given up. I was still stuck in stationary traffic – cars in front, cars behind (…all in the same boat?!)

And through it all I had to remember that Luca was waiting for me, perhaps he was anxious. The fifteen-minute journey became a fifty-minute journey; all ended well.

This week we learnt of the death of Derek Draper, husband of Kate Garraway. Derek was a ruthless, opinionated labour party advisor; Kate, a warm, gentle TV presenter. Two smart people described as ‘the perfect embodiment of the phrase ‘opposites attract’’.

Married in 2005 all went well until in March 2020 Derek caught covid. His illness and their continuing battles against the disease have been well documented; there was a powerful TV documentary.

And through it all Kate’s inspirational love, determination, lack of self-pity, commitment, dedication and loyalty shone through.

I was reminded of the Robbie Williams song:

And through it all she offers me protection
A lot of love and affection
Whether I’m right or wrong
And down the waterfall
Wherever it may take me
I know that life won’t break me
When I come to call, she won’t forsake me
I’m loving angels instead.

This song’s about the enduring power of love… that perhaps involves the supernatural.

This morning I was reading the story of Joseph. He’s rejected by his family, sold and resold as a slave, lied about, unjustly accused and imprisoned:

…the Lord was with him; he showed him kindness and granted him favour in the eyes of the prison warden… The warden paid no attention to anything under Joseph’s care, because the Lord was with Joseph…

And through it all… his unforgetting, loyal, inspirational, loving God was with him.

    1. It’s a good story isn’t it, David. A man who certainly had his share of ups and downs… This time I was interested to follow the story of Judah – who doesn’t always come out positively (as in the Tamar incident), but it was the tribe of Judah that God chose to bless with ‘The Lion’.
