Wisdom From Above

Yesterday included much activity and many people. There were hope-full Christmas plans and solution-less anxieties, grumpy old men, a kindly dentist and a singing grandson. By the end of the day my head was full of people, conversations and stuff…

This morning I read: ‘But the wisdom from above is first of all pure. It is also peace loving, gentle at all times, and willing to yield to others. It is full of mercy and the fruit of good deeds. It shows no favouritism and is always sincere.’

Musing

…Yesterday’s national political news…

Rishi Sunak talking about deporting illegal immigrants to Rwanda, Boris Johnson giving evidence at the covid enquiry, Kier Starmer trying to persuade us that the Labour party are a credible opposition…

I wondered where there was ‘wisdom from above’.

…Friends yesterday…

…Barry had got himself in serious trouble with the police for defending his twenty-year-old daughter from a man he believed was taking advantage of her…

…Single parent Claire was reflecting on her relationship with her son’s father and his influence on her son’s life…

…Danny’s son and daughter-in-law’s marriage isn’t good. He’s unsure what to do for the best for them and his two grandchildren…

…Ray, aware of his age and mortality, was talking about children, grandchildren, revising his will, spending or saving money in the bank…

Barry, Claire, Danny and Ray each need wisdom from above.

…Myself… the wisdom from above that I need… with family and friends – conversations, activities, ordinary life situations… I recalled the old poem:

A wise old owl lived in an oak,
The more he saw, the less he spoke
The less he spoke, the more he heard,
Now, wasn’t he a wise old bird?

That reflective source of wisdom isn’t always easy, but for me it’s comfortable.

Approaching Christmas, we shall think of wise men who stepped out of their comfort zone into the unknown, finding their wisdom from above in a star they’d never seen before. Now that’s more challenging!
