The Day That Changed My Life

Following Bobby Charlton’s death we’ve reflected on the man he was and all that he achieved. We’ve seen old interviews, remembered the 1958 Munich air disaster, which killed eight of the then 20-year-old’s Manchester United team-mates:

‘…it still touches me every day. Sometimes it fills me with a terrible regret and sadness – and guilt that I survived, walked away and found so much…’ That fateful day changed Charlton’s life.

Trevor used to work for a company that exported materials and components. He went with one particular order to a West African country, pleased to be aiding the country’s development and economy.

As his company’s shipment was being unloaded, he also noticed ’red cross’ supplies. Medical aid is good… A crane operator dropped one of the red cross containers. It broke, revealing a shipment of whiskey. That day changed Trevor’s attitude to that country’s government…

About six months ago Geoff was anxious; Alzheimer’s disease had been diagnosed; he knew his short-term memory poor and deteriorating. Yesterday Geoff was bright, coherent, much more confident. He’d seen a doctor who’d changed his medication and prescribed a fortnightly injection. That day has changed his life.

Recently I’ve talked to several friends about days that changed their lives physically – the day they had heart surgery, a hip replacement, cataract surgery…

Musing on days that changed my life… getting married… witnessing the birth of our children… affirming and reaffirming my faith… job interviews…

Last week I was part of a robust discussion regarding Israel and Palestine – who’s right and who’s wrong, appropriate and proportionate action… like other discussions about politics and religion; in church we’ve engaged in similar robust disagreements…

Musing, I concluded that there are more important things than wearisome debates where I seek to prove that I’m right and others are wrong… what’s more important is compassion, forgiveness, food for the hungry, aid for the suffering, support for the weak…

I hope and pray that conclusion, that day, will change my life.
