They’re changing guard at Buckingham Palace –
Christopher Robin went down with Alice.
Alice is marrying one of the guard.
“A soldier’s life is terrible hard,”
Says Alice.
As a child I listened each Saturday to the ‘wireless’… ‘Children’s Favourites’ with ‘Uncle Mac’. I enjoyed A.A. Milne’s poem ‘Buckingham Palace’ set to music… Musing on changes…

We saw a guard in a sentry-box.
“One of the sergeants looks after their socks,”
Domestic change… Daughter-Jo’s cooker has been declared a danger. Hopefully today Dave the electrician will change its safety status. Friends have suggested she gets an air-fryer instead. That would be a bigger change. And I’ve changed my socks…

We looked for the King, but he never came.
“Well, God take care of him, all the same,”
National change… Yesterday it was the local election results … Losses for the Conservatives… gains for Labour and the Liberal Democrats… The Green Party control Mid-Suffolk… Today’s it’s Charles’ coronation… the processions, people, pageantry… our changing monarchy in a changing world.

They’ve great big parties inside the grounds.
“I wouldn’t be King for a hundred pounds,”
Curriculum change… At Grandson-Luca’s school yesterday: ‘The children have all learnt what a coronation is, and about the special objects used, they have also created fact files about King Charles, and learnt all about the countries in the Commonwealth. We have had a crown making competition and a whole school picnic on the field!’

A face looked out, but it wasn’t the King’s.
“He’s much too busy a-signing things,”
Personal change… Nick’s involved in decisions about his son going to university and his mother-in-law going into residential care… Barry’s just had prostate cancer diagnosed…
Musing on the old hymn… ‘Change and decay in all around I see. O Thou who changest not abide with me.’

“Do you think the King knows all about me?”
“Sure to, dear, but it’s time for tea,”
Says Alice.
As we get older Malcolm changes seem to come and not stay so long. If you know what I mean. New developments don’t seem to remain long before replacement. Enjoy Coronation Day with your family and friends. Love is truly the only abiding thing.

That’s a whole lot of change wrapped up in fun verse. Somehow that seems to make it a little more palatable. May we all remember to sing song our way through change!

A.A. Milne’s poetry often includes wisdom – as does his Winnie the Pooh. You’re right Wynne – we must approach change positively and cheerfully – although it’s sometimes more easily said (or sung) than done!
