The First Step

Norwich City won 4-0 on Saturday – their first league game with David Wagner as their new manager. I listened to the match on the radio. We played well.

After the match Wagner said, ‘We played in our style. The players have done fantastically with a lot of energy and aggression. We scored some wonderful goals. It was good, but it’s the first step and we have a lot of work to do.’

Musing… The ancient Chinese proverb: ‘A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step’

Yesterday in church Esther talked about: ‘Stand at the crossroads and look; ask for the ancient paths, ask where the good way is, and walk in it, and you will find rest for your souls.’

We come to crossroads in our lives. We have to make a decision. It’s easy to ‘stand… look… ask…’ We then have to do something – ‘walk’. To walk we must take a first step.

Musing… friends…

…Charlie’s just started a new job; his future’s uncertain…

…Emma recently ended a long relationship that many thought would end in marriage; she’s now started seeing another young man…

…Jill made a New Year’s Resolution to go to the gym, eat more healthily and lose weight…

Charlie, Emma and Jill… taking first steps into the unknown. It could be a long journey.

This morning I read about Moses… The Israelites are slaves in Egypt; Moses will bring them to freedom. The first step is to go to Pharoah and say ‘Let my people go!’

Pharoah’s responds by making life for the Israelite slaves much harder. Israelite slaves complain to Moses; Moses complains to his God… The first step was tough.

The next steps are equally tough… plagues of frogs, gnats, locusts… powerful Pharoah keeps changing his mind… ultimately there’s death. The steps to freedom were painful, confusing…

Musing… David, Esther, Charlie, Emma, Jill, Moses… choosing a direction… taking the first steps… proceeding with the next steps even through pain and confusion…
