Sitting in the Waiting Room

Last night’s television was about waiting… In ‘Call the Midwife’… waiting for a baby’s birth… waiting to see who’d survive the rail crash. On the news… waiting to see what will happen in Ukraine… homes waiting for power to be restored following Storm Eunice… waiting to see the effects of Storm Franklin…

Sitting in the waiting room…

Waiting for the inevitable…

Coastal erosion around East Anglia is frequent. This weekend it’s our local cliffs: Four properties on a cliff edge look set to be demolished… Pakefield has been subject to “unprecedented rates of coastal erosion” since 2019, recent storms have caused further “significant damage”.

Waiting for bad news… We know it will happen. We can’t change it; the outcome will be bad. Seeing friends undergoing end-of-life care in recent months has brought home feelings of sadness, helplessness…

Sitting in the ‘inevitable’ waiting room… learning lessons in courage, resilience and enduring love.

Waiting in anticipation…

After years of waiting Josh and Becca are getting married this year. Plans are taking shape; friends and family are involved; the date is set – and getting closer! There are still unanswered questions, but there’s much joy-full, hope-full anticipation.

Waiting for something good. It will happen – but we have to wait. The holiday, the family gathering, the birth of a baby… Looking forward there’s some uncertainty but there’s eager excitement…

Sitting in the ‘anticipation’ waiting room… learning lessons in patience, appreciation and gratitude.

Waiting in uncertainty…

Yesterday was Neal’s last Sunday as minister of our church… Neal’s last sermon… a farewell lunch… speeches and farewells. What will happen now? The process is clear but the future’s unknown.

We’re waiting… exam results, an imminent interview, a hospital investigation. We don’t know how things will turn out. Today’s uncertain; tomorrow’s unknown. Musing on King David’s words: ‘Wait for the Lord; be strong and take heart and wait for the Lord.’

Sitting in the ‘uncertainty’ waiting room… learning lessons in faith, encouragement and hope.

  1. Hi Malcolm,

Interesting you should pick on this particular subject today….. I am leading the meeting tonight around “uncertainty” and the keys to navigating through times of change.

    As always, thanks for sharing.

    Have a good day

    Jon

  2. Thanks Jon. It’s linked to what Bob taught about when he talked about ‘liminal space’…. we’ve left the security of home, but haven’t yet reached our destination… and we’re not always sure where that is!
