Chris… Chance, Choice and Change

Yesterday my brother Chris died. I appreciated the prayers and support of many – family and friends…

I smiled when I saw this… a Fanta sea… a fantasy (…jokes are always funniest when you explain them)… ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ by Queen (the band not the monarch) starts:

Is this the real life? Is this just fantasy?
Caught in a landslide, no escape from reality
Open your eyes, look up to the skies and see

Is this the real life? Is this just fantasy?… Where does fantasy end and reality begin? Is life just a lottery, a game of chance?

Chance…? The child with additional needs sits next to the gifted and talented child… The comfortably off couple with a happy family have neighbours facing bankruptcy and a messy divorce… The healthy runner doing his three miles before breakfast passes a man with long-covid who struggles to get out… I’m alive and Chris is dead…

Caught in a landslide, no escape from reality… I’m caught up in this thing called life… accelerating and apparently out of control… friends fighting their addictions and demons… stop the world I want to get off! But I can choose…

Choice…? I choose to engage with life today… I choose to see the best in people…. I choose to focus on what is good… I choose to believe in a loving God… I choose to remember Chris with gratitude…

Open your eyes, look up to the skies and see… This text randomly followed the Fanta sea picture.I smiled; it looked like ‘The heavens declare the works of God; the skies proclaim the works of his hands’ was above a Fanta sea… perhaps it was a fantasy…

Change…? I walked along the beach this morning. There was a sharp frost; a beautiful sunrise above a calm sea. My perspective changed. I saw a God who creates perfection and beauty. I renewed my faith in him. I reflected on the heaven where Chris is…

May be an image of nature, beach and ocean

  1. Thanks Lynn. It has certainly struck me in the last couple of days relating to and coming to terms with Chris’s death… choice balances the grace that we receive freely from God… and if Freddie Mercury says so it must be true!!

  2. This touched me deeply, and I’m sorry for the loss of your brother. I, too, am a person of deep and devout faith in the Good Father God…yet I struggle and am perplexed by many things in this strange life. God bless you and your family during this time, and always.
