Rainbow Dreams

Somewhere over the rainbow skies are blue
and the dreams that you dare to dream really do come true

Rainbow dreams of peace, beauty and hope lift us beyond the everyday and mundane to something bigger and better.

John F Kennedy said: You see things; and you say ‘Why?’ But I dream things that never were; and I say ‘Why not?’

What would big ‘why not?’ dreams look like … for world-wide coronavirus… or for refugee camps, for young girls trafficked for prostitution, for drought and famine in Africa, for the favelas of Brazil, for those living in fear of war and terrorism…?

Somewhere over the rainbow way up high
there’s a land that i have heard of once in a lullaby

Dreams often become prayers to many, regardless of their faith or church.

Dreaming inspirational, impossible dreams is an art we can lose. Steve Jobs is credited with saying, ‘If your memory list is longer than your dream list then you have become old.’

Coronavirus has brought dreams and prayers closer to home… the NHS, mental health in our local community, domestic abuse, family breakdown, employment, our church family, valuing each other more…

Somewhere over the rainbow bluebirds fly
birds fly over the rainbow why then oh why can’t I?

Wizard of Oz dreams were intensely personal – the lion to have courage, the scarecrow to have a brain, the tin-man to have a heart and Dorothy to find her way home.

Our personal dreams are often the secret dreams, but often the deepest and the most important and heart-felt – about family, relationships, health, finances, righting past wrongs, present deficiencies or future hope.

Dorothy, dreams, hopes, prayers, Kennedy’s ‘why not?’ and Christian faith come together. Dreams that were over the rainbow and out of reach really can come true.

‘Over the Rainbow’ – song written for the film by Harold Arlen and Yip Harbur

Musing on musings – I think we shall have one more day on dreams – if there is anything you would like to say or contribute…
