Yesterday included my usual Sunday routine: I wrote a list for the coming week: jobs in the garden and home, computer tasks to be completed, people to meet or contact… In the evening Rachel and I went through our diaries for the week – our planned activities and commitments…
I’d like a tidy week – ticking things off my list as they’re completed, diary commitments working out as planned. Of course, things don’t always happen as I expect. Jobs aren’t always completed by the end of the week, plans are changed; my intentions are often greater than my capabilities…

This morning I read… A blind man is brought to Jesus. Jesus spits on the man’s eyes, puts his hands on them and asks what the man sees. He says, ‘I see people, but I can’t see them very clearly. They look like trees walking around.’
This wasn’t the plan of the blind man, or his friends and family. Jesus puts his hands on the man’s eyes again and the man can see clearly. I’m still wondering why it didn’t happen first time.
I was reminded yesterday of one of my favourite songs:
All God’s creatures got a place in the choir
Some sing low and some sing higher
Some sing out loud on the telephone wires
Some just clap their hands, or paws, or anything they got now
A choir with ducks, donkeys, bullfrogs and cows still makes me smile, but the practicalities…?! I’ve enjoyed running human choirs in the past, but it’s not always easy. Awareness of the personality and musicality of each individual, including everyone, modifying initial plans… but then adding a porcupine, alligator and honeybee!
I’m prepared for the week; I have my list and diary. Perhaps they might have to be modified. My plans may finish as people looking like walking trees; I might have to include an extra badger, owl or hippopotamus…
Perhaps then I may see an unplanned unexpected miracle or hear a happy and harmonious choir.
I like the idea of making a list, Malcolm. That’s one of my favorite Bible stories about Jesus and also a hymn I’m fond of. My ambitions outrun my capabilities, too. So upon reading your post, I am glad to be reminded that I’m not alone in this. I’ve been challenged with identifying what’s on my calendar this week that really doesn’t need to be and finding out what’s most important. I’m finding this is difficult and different than it used to be. Blessings for the week that lies ahead.
