Transformational ‘Will’ Promises

Yesterday pictures of Martha and Jack’s wedding arrived on Facebook. We’ve known Martha since she was born… coming to church, her progress at school, in her family. She went to university, met Jack… and on Tuesday they got married.  

I love the traditional wedding vows… ‘Wilt thou have this man to thy wedded husband, to live together after God’s ordinance in the holy estate of Matrimony? Wilt thou obey him, and serve him, love, honour, and keep him, in sickness and in health; and, forsaking all other, keep thee only unto him, so long as ye both shall live?’

Martha may have problems saying ‘I will’ to those particular words; keeping the promises she made to Jack will change her life.

Last night I watched an excellent production of ‘We Will Rock You’. I know some of the actors, musicians and production team. Karen, the producer, summed it up: ‘Being surrounded by so much talent in our town never stops amazing me…’

Everyone can join in the simple lyrics of the title song, ‘We will, we will rock you,’ Together with stomps and claps it’s like an ancient war dance or a determined army marching together. It’s a promise and a threat; together we can achieve something. The weak, marginalised, disaffected or rebellious have a collective voice, becoming confident, strong, included, purposeful

‘We will rock you’ is a transformational promise of empowerment, resilience and resistance.  

This morning I read…

‘I will put my law in their minds and write it on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be my people. No longer will they teach their neighbour, or say to one another, ‘Know the Lord,’ because they will all know me, from the least of them to the greatest,’ declares the Lord. ‘For I will forgive their wickedness and will remember their sins no more.’

God brings ‘I will’ transformational promises… with the personal commitment of Martha and Jack’s wedding, and the resilient power of ‘We Will Rock You’.
