My favourite story from this weekend’s Lowestoft Journal starts, ‘Seagulls have been spotted acting ‘drunk’ and disrupting traffic by stumbling around coastal towns in Suffolk. The birds were seen behaving oddly after feasting on swarms of flying ants…’
Dr Viola Rose-Smith, ornithological expert, says, ‘Ants produce formic acid, and because it’s a mild toxin the gulls can act a bot woozy and come across as drunk’. That’s it. Eating ants makes seagulls drunk.
Later she says, ‘I would really love someone to test the theory and see if the formic acid is making the gulls drunk.’ She’s not sure. There may be an alternative explanation!
Last night on ‘Antiques Roadshow’ there was a Chinese three-legged frog. It was strangely attractive because it was so ugly.
Apparently, according to feng shui beliefs, this three-legged frog helps attract and protect wealth, and guards against bad luck. Feng shui also says where and how it should be positioned in your house to bring good fortune.
If I owned one such frog I’d take an alternative point of view.
Christian friends have told me that God never gives us more than we can handle, quoting: ‘God is faithful. He will not allow the temptation to be more than you can stand…’
Yesterday I read Katie Davis taking an alternative view, ‘I believe that God totally, absolutely, intentionally gives us more than we can handle, Because this is when we surrender to Him and he takes over, proving Himself by doing the impossible in our lives.’
This morning I read:
‘…Don’t let the wise boast in their wisdom,
or the powerful boast in their power,
or the rich boast in their riches.
But those who wish to boast
should boast in this alone:
that they truly know me and understand that I am the Lord
who demonstrates unfailing love
and who brings justice and righteousness to the earth…’
Many say that you should be wise, powerful and rich. Jeremiah says there’s an alternative – knowing God’s love, justice and righteousness is better.
