In church yesterday Danny talked about manna… Moses leads Israel out of Egypt… They miraculously escape crossing the Red Sea… They’re hungry and grumbling in the desert.
God promises bread from heaven. ‘Manna’ appears on the ground: ‘…Some gathered a lot, some only a little. But when they measured it out, everyone had just enough. Those who gathered a lot had nothing left over, and those who gathered only a little had enough…’
We went home. Seven of us enjoyed ‘Granny’s roast dinner’. Meals were plated up for Hannah and Emily who couldn’t make it. There was more than enough for all of us.
We remembered that last week Grandson-Zak passed his driving test. The examiner considered that Zak is good enough to drive on our roads.
Later I watched some of the World Cup Final from New York… The Spanish footballers were good enough to win. The Argentine team wasn’t good enough.
We watched a film that quoted Charles Lamb who talked about being, ‘Contented with little yet wishing for more’; an interesting commentary on ‘enough’.
Charles Lamb was a contemporary of Wordsworth and Coleridge; he also said, ‘Tis the privilege of friendship to talk nonsense, and to have her nonsense respected.’ Having friends that respect my nonsense is enough.
I love reading Bible verses that I don’t remember reading before. This morning I enjoyed, ‘The bed is too short to stretch out on, the blanket too narrow to wrap around you.’ – You’ve made your own bed – lie on it; it isn’t enough.
Danny talked about the God who provides His people with enough. St Paul wrote:
‘I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances. I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want.’
I’m praying that whatever today brings, I will be content and appreciate having enough.

Thanks, Lyn. Perhaps the ‘strength for today and bright hope for tomorrow’ hymn line is a prayer for ‘enough’.

Whenever discontent creeps into my thoughts I need only to reflect on the countless, less fortunate others we share this planet with to bring me back to the reality of the underserved abundance God has mercifully blessed me with.

I definitely agree with Charles Lamb’s “Contented with little yet wishing for more”. And, when wishing for more I see this as a call to aspire to greater things. By that I am not referring to Burnham’s Cabinet hopefuls, but the desire to achieve as much as one can. It’s the reason so many young people will lave the ones they love and go off to university soon in the hope that their strivings will eventually get them more.
I’ll not rant about those whose “wish for more” is an entitlement they feel they have.
Today I would be very content with a little rain but really am wishing for a lot more.
