Each year I read through the whole Bible. I’ve done it for many years. I start Genesis on January 1st. I finish Revelation on December 31st. I’m now reading Psalms – the central book of the Bible. Today I read the central chapter – Psalm 118. The central verse of the central chapter of the central book is verse 8:
‘It is better to take refuge in the Lord than to trust in humans.’

Yesterday’s news…
National Politics: Sir Keir Starmer announced that he is stepping down as Prime Minister and leader of the Labour party. There was speculation as to what will happen next. We shall have our seventh prime minister on ten years…
Life-Changing Decisions: One friend had a job interview for a post that she really wants. Another has fallen in love with a woman who lives in another country many miles away. Both are in potentially life changing situations.

Shovel-backed Crane: Richard made a rare bird – a ‘shovel-backed crane’. Cutting up a pair of edging sheers and an old shovel, adding a couple of rusty hinges and redundant spanners he created this bird-sculpture.
Motor Bikes: I’d heard of ‘DOT’ motor bikes, but knew no more about them. I learnt they were founded in Salford, Manchester, 1903 by Harry Reed, building motorbikes for the Isle of Man TT… and that DOT stands for ‘Devoid of Trouble’.

Shakespeare Quote: I was reminded of theMacbeth speech about the fragility of life that includes the lines:
Life’s but a walking shadow, a poor player
That struts and frets his hour upon the stage
And then is heard no more.
Musing… When… There’s national uncertainty… Friends are making life-changing decisions… Life changes unexpectedly from shovel and sheers to a rusty old bird… All is good and devoid of trouble… Life is a fragile walking shadow…Then… Right at the centre… ‘It is better to take refuge in the Lord that to trust in humans’
Unfortunately I cannot get to John’s funeral today but I hope his life will not be remembered as
…..(a) poor player
That struts and frets his hour upon the stage
And then is heard no more.
He had an unbelievable effect on many many lives. He certainly did on my own.

Thanks Alan. I certainly had John in mind when recalling the speech. I remember John playing Macbeth… Many remeber John with warmth and fondness.
