Taking on a Project

A few years ago, we heard about a new café and restaurant that was planned for the Lowestoft sea-front. We saw the plans. Construction work started in April 2024. We’ve watched each week as the building has slowly materialised.

This week’s Lowestoft Journal tells us: A council spokesman said: ‘The project is on track for completion ahead of the First Light Festival, with the final works now under way.’ That’s three weeks’ time!

We often have ‘projects’ – enterprises undertaken to achieve a particular aim… The word ‘project’ comes from the Latin verb proicere. Two parts: pro – meaning ‘forwards’, iacere – meaning ‘to throw’. Hence a ‘projectile’ is something thrown forward.

A project is an idea that’s thrown forward. A plan is made, steps and stages identified, action is started… eventually the aim is achieved.

At our Men’s Shed, recent workshop ‘projects’ include refurbishing a park bench, creating a child’s toy, making garden planters, birdboxes, hedgehog hotels… It starts with an idea, plans are made, the idea takes shape, the project’s completed.

One of our Seagull Theatre projects… Last year we obtained the performing rights to the Queen musical ‘We Will Rock You’. We appointed directors… Auditions were held… Rehearsals are going well… Tickets are selling… August performances… Project completion.

Many years ago, Geoff saw homeless men in Lowestoft. He had an idea. He threw his idea forward, calling it the ‘Adam Outreach Project’. He set up Hope House… Its website states:

‘Adam Outreach Project is a Christian charity offering supportive housing for those affected by addiction, mental health challenges and homelessness. Our Christian ethos guides everything we do, inspiring us to care, support, house and walk alongside people on their journey to recovery…’

Lowestoft’s new seafront café and Hope House are two ‘projects’ that stand within a few hundred yards of each other. The café building project will soon be complete; many will enjoy its facilities. The Adam Outreach Project will continue; comparatively few men will benefit, but their lives will be forever changed.

  1. The many projects in my life have come and gone, Malcolm. However, the one that remains is Christ’s work in me. I understand the dedication date has yet to be set, but I have the Lord’s assurance He’ll call when the project is complete.
