Five things from yesterday
Local Council Elections: I voted. Britain’s political map is changing. In this new era of multi-party politics, the elections in Wales, Scotland and England are seeing traditional conservative and labour voters changing allegiance. One TV commentator summed it up with two questions: ‘Who do you blame? Who do you trust?’
Sir David Attenborough’s birthday: We saw Sir David Attenborough saying: ‘I had rather thought that I would celebrate my 100th birthday quietly, but it seems that many of you have had other ideas.’ His birthday is today. Sir David has dedicated his life to exploring, asking questions about, and sharing the wonders of the natural world.

Pocket-money demand: Martin has a new job, appointed to a position where he will have more responsibility and more money. Aware of this, his children, aged 10-ish and 15-ish consulted with each other and together put in, what they thought was a reasonable request, for a raise in their pocket money. Martin turned down their request.
Growing up: I had a couple of conversations about teenagers sitting exams, attending school proms, passing their driving test, getting a job, questions about their futures. Josh has a job interview in London tomorrow, his eighteenth birthday on Sunday, his first A-level exam on Monday… and is planning his post-exam celebrations.

Cake: French niece-in-law Julie, who runs ‘Cup & Cakes Salon de Thé’, a ‘tea-room with British influences’ advertised (I always enjoy the English translation!) ‘Floral lemon peacock cake. An ultra moist lemon cake that wakes up the taste buds. Added some edible flowers to bring a little poetic touch. With a cup of Earl Grey, Darjeeling or Afternoon tea.’
Musing: Big important questions of politics and the natural world… smaller important questions of families, jobs and growing up… Trying to answer life’s important questions wise Solomon concluded in Ecclesiastes they were all ‘meaningless, a chasing after the wind’…*
I’m increasingly persuaded by the saying, ‘Whatever the question, cake is the answer’. Perhaps Julie’s floral lemon peacock cake is the answer.
