When Hearing is Hidden

This Weekend…

…I had my hearing tested at ‘Hidden Hearing’. It’s a couple of years since I was last ‘done’. I was plugged in and put through the tests. My hearing has deteriorated in my left ear and I’m advised to wear hearing aids. Some of my hearing isn’t hidden; it’s disappeared!

…We were playing cards at Men’s Shed. There was the usual banter and laughter. Somehow the conversation got round to Christmas. ‘I hate Christmas,’ said Keith. His laughter stopped and there was a tear in his eye. We remembered that his wife had died on Christmas Day 2024. He’d love to be able to hear her but can’t.

…I met Gemma. I’ve known Gemma since she was a girl, but haven’t seen her to talk to for a number of years. In brief ‘catch up’ I learnt that last year her brother decided that he wanted no more contact with her. I know her brother too. I didn’t ask about the details. It seems that their hearing of each other has been deliberately hidden.

…We saw ‘The Carpenters’ Story’ – including the song:

There’s a kind of hush
All over the world tonight
All over the world
You can hear the sound of lovers in love

You can only hear the sound of love if you ‘listen very carefully’. It’s hidden from those who can’t or won’t listen.

Musing…

Some hearing is hidden… and can never be heard. My friend’s son is profoundly deaf and will never hear… Keith’s wife, sadly, will never be heard again.

Some hearing is hidden… because we choose not to hear it. The broken relationships, Gemma and her brother… the wise monkey, with paws over his ears, chooses to ‘hear no evil’.

Some hearing is hidden… but if we listen carefully, if we get the correct hearing aids, we can hear good things… the sound of love, the sound of peace… Elijah experienced earthquake, wind and fire, but heard his God in a gentle whisper…
