What To Do With My Bad

Needing a new laptop, I went to Currys and spoke to a nice young man who appeared knowledgeable. I explained what I wanted; he suggested a particular model. I checked that it could do all that I required. ‘No. It won’t,’ he said. ‘Sorry, sir. That’s my bad.’

I enjoyed ‘My bad’. I’ve heard other young people use the phrase…

He recommended a different laptop. I bought it on Monday.

A load of rubbish had accumulated in the garage – broken suitcases, ancient electrical goods, the final remains of Christmas… I booked a timeslot at the local dump, filled the car up and disposed of it on Tuesday.

Some ‘bad’ just needs to be dumped.

Waiting for an appointment at the eye clinic yesterday I was entertained by a little girl and her mother singing:

Five little monkeys jumping on the bed,
One fell off and bumped his head,
Mama called the doctor and the doctor said,
“No more monkeys jumping on the bed!”

Some ‘bad’ needs to be corrected and lessons learnt.

A woman with a patch over one eye was also waiting with her husband. After their appointment the woman had no eye patch. The smiling husband announced, ‘She mustn’t fly, she can’t do scuba-diving or bungee-jumping, but she can make a cup of tea.

Sometimes we must accept ‘bad’ and appreciate ‘good’.

Yesterday I was reminded of the ancient myth of the lotus flower and the mud. The beautiful lotus flower starts in the mud, has its roots in the mud, but once it blooms it’s entirely unmarked by that mud. The lotus flower can’t exist without the mud…

Sometimes ‘bad’ is necessary for ‘good’ to flourish.

This morning… musing on my ‘bad’…

Praying for the wisdom to know… which of my ‘bad’ needs to be replaced with the Currys-young-man’s ‘good’… which ‘bad’ needs to be dumped… which ‘bad’ has monkey-lessons to teach me… which ‘bad’ must be accepted and balanced with cheerful-husband ‘good’… which ‘bad’ can produce beautiful, flourishing ‘good’.
