On Thursday in Lincoln, returning from the castle to the bus station, we saw important-looking smart-suited men, posh cars, men in military uniforms, photographers, a crowd…
‘What’s going on?’ I asked a young photographer.
‘Prince Edward’s visiting the ‘Crooked House’. I didn’t know that there was a ‘Crooked House’ or that Prince Edward was visiting it.
‘When will he be coming out?’ I asked. We might see him!
‘I don’t know.’ The photographer was waiting. We walked on. We had a bus to catch.

Yesterday morning we enjoyed the harvest festival at St Cuthbert’s church, Ackworth. They were collecting for the Pontefract foodbank… Canned fruit and vegetables, soup, cereals, toiletries…
Pontefract foodbank website states that it’s ‘…working to tackle food poverty and hunger… We want to see more people helped out of crisis and fewer people needing foodbanks in the future.’
When will this happen? They don’t know… but they’ll continue to collect food and help people in crisis.

We’ve been visiting our Yorkshire relations. Niece-Catherine’s daughter Hester is becoming a wedding and events singer. Her Facebook page states:
I’ve been singing and performing for over 15 years and have a degree in singing and performing. I sang at my best friend’s wedding a few years ago and it reignited my love for singing… I recently decided that now was the right time to take the leap and start full time and give it my all.’
…Hester doesn’t know her future… but she’s active on social media…Yesterday she was at a wedding fair, promoting her skill, passion and new business…

This morning I read of Jesus’ final conversation with his disciples. They ask ‘When?’
‘Master, are you going to restore the kingdom to Israel now? Is this the time?’
‘He told them, “You don’t get to know the time. Timing is the Father’s business. What you’ll get is the Holy Spirit…’
Musing… sometimes ‘when’ might be the wrong question… ‘I don’t know’ is an OK answer… timing is often God’s business.
Timing is God’s business – isn’t that true? Thanks for the musing, Malcolm!

I reflected on – and changed – that last sentence several times. My thinking went something like this… Some timings I chose – I chose what time I got us this morning, I chose when I got my breakfast, I chose when I went out, when I met friends. Some timings I have no choice or control over and trust God – regarding health, my friends and family. And some have a bit of my choice, but I trust God in that choice – say finances, important conversations, decisions about the future.
I wished it were more straightforward… but in a strange way the uncertainty and complexity seems to deepen trust in God’s timings.
