Peaceful, Easy Feeling.

Yesterday Rachel and I packed up the car to spend a few days away. Driving up the A17 out of East Anglia the radio played The Eagles…

‘…and I gotta peaceful, easy feeling
and I know you won’t let me down
’cause I’m already standing on the ground.’

I liked musing a ‘peaceful easy feeling’ on holiday, in relationships, in life…

In rural Lincolnshire, signposts suggested that ‘Stepping Out’ might be somewhere for an afternoon walk… Stepping out of the car we were enveloped by a swarm of ladybirds… on our clothes, in our clothes, in our hair… We walked up a track. They remained with us, appearing to appreciate our company much more than we did theirs.

Returning to our car many joined us uninvited… We spoke to them gently, kindly, inviting them to leave, pointing out that they’d disturbed our peaceful easy feeling.

The radio news confirmed that 47-year-old Lewis Moody’s recently been diagnosed with motor neurone disease. Moody was England rugby captain, part of the 2003 World Cup-winning side, achieving multiple English and European titles with Leicester.

Later on the TV news we saw Moody at his home, speaking, alongside his wife Annie, of their two teenage sons. Saying that he feels “at ease” he’s concentrating on his immediate wellbeing, his family, preparing for when the disease worsens. I wondered about the Moody family’s ‘peaceful easy feeling’.

On the local news, Newcastle-based Dr Sarah Mills explained how ‘Foetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder’ occurs when a pregnant mother drinks too much… resulting in a child with physical, behavioural and learning disabilities.

She described Lockdown as a time of drinking more… unplanned pregnancies… cases of FASD… children starting school this term.

Harry lives with his adoptive parents near Sunderland. Diagnosed with FASD when he was three-and-a-half he’s now eight. His adoptive mother, Palma George, described his ongoing challenging behaviour. No peaceful easy feeling!

And I’m musing… Is ‘The peace of God which passes understanding’ a peaceful easy feeling… or something much deeper?

  1. God’s peace comes, we sense it, but we no more understand it than we can discover where the beauty in the butterfly resides. Then in my unwanted, and unforseen circumstances, His peace takes a deeper dig into my heart and carries me through.

  2. Thanks, Pete. I’d probably explain God’s peace in words similar to yours – that’s a great summary of the truth. It’s real, it’s there, it’s available, it’s there for all.

Hesitation comes sometimes because talking about God’s peace isn’t the same as knowing it – talking’s easy…. And the more I think I know and experience, the more I realise there is to know and experience. I’m still learning – and often I’m a slow learner.
