On Saturday we went to Norwich for the football, our final pre-season friendly, against the Dutch side Breda. We have a new manager, Liam Manning, and a number of new players, so we weren’t sure what to expect.
The team looked strong, skilful, well-organised; we won 2-0. New players were good; the manager has started well. Is Manning the best man for the job? We shall start to see next Saturday when the season commences; we shall continue to see as Norwich City’s season progresses.

Yesterday at our Men’s Shed Chris was creating a bird table… making and attaching the roof. Seven men were gathered round him. Some questioned his skills, challenged his expertise, told him what he’d done wrong. Each had an opinion, a ‘helpful’ piece of advice. There was much laughter by men with their hands in their pockets.
When everyone else had walked away, Francis stayed and helped him out… possibly not the most skilled craftsmen, but he was willing and able to get involved…

Our car has been making a strange whining noise – especially when it’s cruising at 50+ mph. It’s been doing it for several months. The car hasn’t broken down, and the noise hasn’t gone away. My knowledge of car mechanics is negligible.
Andy’s garage has looked after our car for many years. I phoned up yesterday afternoon. Andrea, who keeps Andy organised, booked us in. Andy’s a skilled mechanic. We trust him, both to analyse the problem and to fix it.

I read Zephaniah this morning. A contemporary of the better known prophet Jeremiah, he foretells a dark future for the Jewish nation, describing terrible judgement, invasion, war, destruction, distress…
In the end God sorts everything out… Like Andy he has the long-established skill to analyse the problem and put it right… Like Francis he’s willing to hang in there and get involved… Like Liam he’s regularly put to the test… My personal experience is that this God is, without doubt, the best person for the job.
