Moving On

The big news for Norwich City fans yesterday was that head coach Johannes Hoff Thorup has been sacked; ex-Arsenal and England midfielder Jack Wilshere is in charge for the two remaining games of the season.

Losing six of the last eight matches, letting in eight goals in the two Easter games, the directors have run out of patience. BHT is a lovely guy, but the club must move on. Sporting director Ben Knapper said: ‘…recent results and performances have deemed it necessary for us make a change.’

Stevie Wonder’s old song speaks of moving on, from weariness, loneliness and trouble to a dream, a place of hope and sunshine. He’ll keep searching in hope until he finds it

Like a long lonely stream
I keep runnin’ towards a dream
Movin’ on, movin’ on

‘Cause there’s a place in the sun
Where there’s hope for everyone
Where my poor restless heart’s gotta run
Whether Norwich City can ever move on to that ‘place in the sun’ remains to be seen.

Today, April 23rd, is St George’s day. In many places the old legend will be re-told… The dragon terrorises the village… the dragon’s placated with sheep and then human victims… it’s the turn of the beautiful princess… St George arrives… the princess is saved… the dragon’s killed.

The village can only move on from its fear and despair when the dragon’s dead.

Yesterday I met and chatted with several folks who are seeking to move on from ordinary but profound challenges in their lives. Damaged, apparently unresolvable, relationships… recurring ill health… depression and mental ill-health… past guilt and failure re-surfacing… tension and disagreement with a loved partner… regretted errors of judgement.

Last weekend’s Easter truth remains… we can move on from hope-less to hope-full, joy-less to joy-full, love-less to love-full, life-less to life-full. It’s about changes – appointing a new manager, defeating a dragon, retaining hope…

I know there’s a place in the sun
And before my life is done
Gotta find me a place in the sun…
