Would I Lie To You?

Sometimes we watch the TV comedy panel show ‘Would I Lie To You?’. The regular presenter and team captains are joined by celebrity guests. Players reveal unusual facts, outrageous claims, embarrassing personal tales; the opposing team must determine truth from lies, drawing the viewing audience in with them.

Teams score a point for correctly discerning truth and lies… and a point for convincing others that a lie is true, or the truth is a lie…

Yesterday was April 1st, a day for humorous lies. The Southwold Pier Facebook page stated:

BREAKING NEWS: Southwold Pier Extends by 500ft Overnight!

Visitors this morning were stunned to find Southwold Pier had mysteriously grown by 500ft overnight, stretching even closer to France! Engineers are baffled, seagulls are confused, and local fishermen are delighted.

Come take a stroll and see for yourself… but be quick before the tide takes it back!

Many scored a point for spotting the lie!

Yesterday the ‘The Rob Clarke Community Trust’ was officially launched. A committed team of folks have run the Lowestoft Foodbank for many years; they’ve now formed an independent charity, stating:

‘We are dedicated to addressing poverty in Lowestoft and beyond, focusing on alleviating crises and tackling root causes such as isolation, homelessness, unemployment, and mental health challenges… we offer essential services including emergency food distribution, school holiday meals, and support for financial resilience…’

The team score a point for spotting the truth about local need.

Last night we reflected on Mark 13… the end of the world, Jesus return… Truth, opinion and lies? Christians disagree with each other, calling out lies, proclaiming their truth, scoring points…

On the news… Politicians present truth, opinion and lies together. Would I lie to you? You bet! It’s difficult to discern truth from lies, decide who’s on which team, and who’s scoring most points!

Musing… praying… for the wisdom to discern truth from lies… not to score a point, but ‘to act justly, love mercy and walk humbly with my God’.

  1. Yesterday I sent out a text to all the family and friends in my phone that I was quitting my job to start a hip hop music studio. A couple counseled me to try this new gig in my spare time for a while before actually quitting my job. Some encouraged me to go for it! No one recognized immediately that it was April 1st until I told them. Now I’m wondering if my family and friends are really so gullible or if I should start a hip hop music studio.

  2. Personally, I hate April Fool’s Day and practical jokes. But I pray earnestly for discernment as the world grows darker. As you point out, it is almost impossible now to tell truth from lies in many situations. Politicians have always tended to shade the truth to their advantage. Unfortunately, the news media are no longer of any help. Thankfully, we can still rely on biblical truth. Christ remains the way, the truth, and the life.

    1. April Fool’s Day isn’t my favourite either, Anna, but I do understand that a bit of harmless fun can be entertaining. I do remember the first time, as a child, I understood that we were allowed to lie on April 1st! Discerning Biblical truth, to me remains both a comfort and a challenge.
