Early yesterday morning a seven-year-old girl came into a teacher-friend’s classroom clutching a small box. ‘What have you got there?’ my friend asked.
‘It’s my Valentine’s Day present from my boyfriend,’ she announced. She opened the box and displayed a small ring. ‘It’s a real diamond, you know… It cost 99p’
Choices of love… and their cost.

Last night’s news, focused on peace in Ukraine… US President Trump’s telephone conversation with Russian President Putin… US Vice President Vance’s Munich conversation with Ukrainian President Zelensky… the opinions and role of NATO and European leaders…
Serious looking men were negotiating, discussing the choices they can make, that will affect war, peace and the lives of millions.
Choices of life… and their cost.

The news then described an asteroid that’s currently tens of millions of miles away from Earth and moving further away. After going around the Sun it will become visible again in 2028. The probability of an impact with Earth at 2.02pm on 22 December 2032 was 1.2% in January; it’s 2.3% now.
There’s no human choice!

I reflected on big life choices that I’ve made… A-level studies, teacher training, marriage… Some choices necessarily prevented other choices… Rachel and I choosing to have a family, running our church youth group, when we were in our twenties led to other choices in the way we spent our time and money then and subsequently…
In more recent years… Choosing early retirement, post-retirement studies, local community, family involvement… Life continues to require small daily choices, big life changing choices…

Your post made me wonder how many of my life’s choices would I change if I could? And how many times did I unknowingly choose not to follow God’s will? Thanks, Malcolm, for the food for thought. 🙂

For me, Nancy, the thing about faith is that God can turn round our bad choices so that they teach us an important lesson, and then be changed for the good.

Thank you, Malcolm. I heard someone describe their way of making choices based on the good fruits they hope to produce. I like this way of evaluating, discerning the choices we are able to make.

I agree. I like the principle, Karen. I confess that sometimes I just make decisions without a lot of thought. I think I am getting better, though!
