Let It Go

Last night we watched a wonderful group of young people perform Frozen. It’s a great story about two sisters in the town of Arendelle…

Newly crowned Queen Elsa accidentally sets off an eternal winter. Her younger sister Anna, along with iceman Kristoff, snowman Olaf, and reindeer Sven, goes off on an adventure to find her sister, bring back summer and save the kingdom.

We particularly enjoyed the famous ‘Let it go’, sung by Elsa, and then by the whole cast. It’s a song about letting go of fears and worries about what others think; it’s about self-acceptance, coming to terms with who you are, being true to yourself.

We saw ‘let it go’ in the children on stage… letting go of their end-of-term tiredness as they displayed energy and enthusiasm, letting go of their nerves as they performed with ability, confidence and assurance, letting go of any desire for personal glory as they enjoyed and supported each other.

We saw ‘let it go’ in Emily and Cerys who directed the show… letting go of their time and effort to rehearse with the children, letting go of their desire to be performing, to enable the children to take centre stage, letting go of impatience, setbacks, and frustration, as they constantly worked with patience and a smile.

‘Let it go’ is central to Christmas… letting go of time, money and energy… self-centred getting, what’s best for me, what makes my life more comfortable…

…Good people raising money for worthwhile causes, running soup kitchens and food banks… health-care providers going above and beyond the call of duty… parents give their children the best they possibly can.

‘Let it go’ is about relationships. In the first Christmas it was the relationship between a mother and a baby, God and humanity. In Frozen it’s about the relationships between snowman, queen, reindeer, people… above all between two sisters.

And somehow, as we let it go… our prejudice, anger, anxiety, self-importance, jealousy and greed… we discover forgiveness, hope, trust, joy, peace and love.
