I’m a creature of habit. Most days starts the same. I have a daily routine
I wake up, get up: …hoping and praying that I shall be awake and alert to the opportunities of today
I shave and shower: …needing to wash away yesterday’s unpleasantness– physically, mentally, spiritually.
I get dressed: …remembering St Paul words: ‘Clothe yourself with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience… praying that these might be my clothes too.

I come downstairs: starting the day at the same level as everybody else.
I make a cup of tea and recharge my phone: …needing refreshment, being fully charged, ready for the day ahead.
I look in the garden: …falling leaves from the apple tree… a blackbird and a few pigeons feeding… squirrels burying conkers… Life goes on with or without me.
I’m grateful: …thanking my God for yesterday – I’d written five things last night in a notebook for which I’m grateful.
I’m prayerful: …praying for folks I chatted to yesterday and previous days – I’d written their names in another notebook.

I consult my diary: …plans for the day ahead – things to do, people to see. Some days go smoothly; in others the plans change…
I read: …today it’s the beginning of Mark’s gospel. John the Baptist… Jesus teaches, heals, calls disciples to follow him… focusing on a few verses – Jesus is criticised by his opponents… life isn’t always easy.
I feed: …feeding my body… as well as my spirit and mind… wanting all input to be nourishing, wholesome, generating energy and growth. My ‘Grumpy Old Man’ mug gives context.

I reflect and write: …pausing… Believing in an ever-present God – where was He yesterday and this morning?… Believing that he speaks to me… what’s he been He saying? …and so my daily blog…
When I shaved I looked in the mirror. Each morning I reflect on myself… my God… my world… my blessings… my failures… my opportunities… seeking to receive a fresh perspective.
I’m good to go…

Excellent routine, Malcolm! Thanks for this morning’s lift and inspiration!

I think, Grant, it’s a fine line between a routine and a ritual… and I’m sure that some would put me on some sort of spectrum (!) but for now it seems to work for me.

Your healthy morning routine sounds like a great way to start your day with an alert mind and good intentions. The “quack of dawn” meme was a hoot! 🙂
