Bring Him Home

God on high, hear my prayer
In my need, you have always been there
He is young, he’s afraid
Let him rest, Heaven blessed

Bring him home
Bring him home
Bring him home

He’s like the son I might have known
If God had granted me a son
The summers die one by one
How soon they fly on and on
And I am old, and will be gone

Bring him peace, bring him joy
He is young, he is only a boy
You can take, you can give
Let him be, let him live
If I die, let me die
Let him live

Bring him home
Bring him home
Bring him home

God on high, hear my prayer… Marius is involved in the revolution. The situation is out of Jean Valjean’s control. He can do nothing more – and nothing less – than bring the situation and his feelings to his God. I pray for situations out of my control.

In my need, you have always been there… Marius has seen God protecting and providing for him in the past… I reflect with gratitude on the God who has always been there for me.

He is young… I am old… Valjean, the old man, is feeling his age. He prays for his younger friend. I pray for younger friends who have the potential of a full life ahead of them.

He’s like the son I might have known… Valjean loves Marius like a son. It’s an emotional prayer of empathy and vulnerability coming from Valjean’s heart of unconditional love. I acknowledge that my prayers often lack that love and emotional vulnerability

Bring him peace, bring him joy… Valjean’s prayer is selfless. He’s not thinking about himself, only peace and protection for those he cares about. I pray that my prayers might be less self-centred.

Let him live… let me die… Valjean’s prayer is sacrificial. He’s prepared to die if it means that Marius can live. I reflect on Jesus, the one who died so that I can live. I pray that as I seek to follow Jesus I might show that sacrificial love.

Bring him home. The future – particularly Marius’ safety – is in God’s hands. God is the only one who can bring Marius home unharmed. This morning I read, ‘Not by might, nor by power, but by my Spirit.’ I continue to put myself and those I love into the hands of the almighty God.
