Yesterday someone on TV used the phrase ‘all the gear, no idea’.
I thought of one guy who bought several top of the range guitars, cases, amplifiers… but couldn’t play and didn’t play… Another gent I know thought he’d take up golf. He spent a lot of money on golf clubs, a bag, trolley, clothing… it had to be the best… but after one attempt gave up…
All the gear, no idea.

Yesterday morning grandson-Luca started high school. His mother put the obligatory picture on Facebook. He certainly has all the gear – uniform, school-bag, pencil case, PE kit… He was all set and looking forward to it; he had lots of ideas!
Later in the morning I went to hospital. The letter said: ‘Bilateral selective laser trabeculoplasty… to reduce intraocular pressure and prevent the progression of glaucoma.’ Dr Sharma showed me into her room. All the gear was there for the laser treatment on my eyes. She used it carefully, skilfully, patiently. No idea? She was an expert!

We heard a thump on the back door. We looked out the window. A pigeon, chased by a sparrowhawk had flown into the back door. By the time we were looking sparrowhawk had killed pigeon and was proceeding to eat his breakfast. With his flying skills, beak and claws he had all of the gear necessary to obtain his breakfast, and every idea how to get it.

Jesus told the story of the rich, successful farmer who decided to replace his barns with bigger, better ones. He says to himself: ‘My friend, you have enough stored away for years to come. Now take it easy! Eat, drink, and be merry!’
All the gear, but no idea… ‘But God said to him, ‘You fool! You will die this very night. Then who will get everything you worked for?’
I’m left musing on Jesus’ conclusion: ‘Yes, a person is a fool to store up earthly wealth but not have a rich relationship with God.’

Here in Texas we say, “all hat and no horse!” Glad your eye procedure went well, Malcolm!

Malcolm, I’m “chewing” this knowledge, my friend. As always, great nuggets of truth! All the gear, no idea. Even when I THOUGHT I MIGHT be a good golfer (says the girl whose dad took her golfing, she golfed with her great aunts and even her then-husband). I never thought I DESERVED good clubs, lol.
Bigger barn, more store….earthly treasures don’t last. I’ve seen my things taken away. I lived in my RV for 4 years and felt liberation like never before. It seems the gear is what people hope might bring some instant knowledge–or motivation and desire to grow. Kinda like the people who might go to church, have the cross around our necks, yet,…no idea.
I’m so happy your eye doctor knew! From my view, you have 20/20 always, dear Malcolm!

Thanks Karla. Good thoughts. Certainly current materialism puts great emphasis on getting the gear – and that doesn’t necessarily achieve anything. And yes – people who have all of the godly gear, but have no idea what it’s all about! I think Jesus was pretty critical of folks like that.

Thank you, Malcolm. I want to use my free will in a way that helps others. Being the overthinker, I often wonder if my behavior will be a help or a hinder in leading to truth. Like, for instance, me using the word smartass on my website? Then, I giggle and think, God loves me in all my messiness. I best stay real! I’m very careful. I strive to be like Christ. Forgiving, full of grace…and most importantly, showing love to others.

Fortunately, you had an expert working on your eyes! Your handsome grandson Luca appears to be brimming with so many Ideas, he probably could do the teaching. Interesting post, Malcolm. 🙂

I’m constantly amazed at the skill of doctors, Nancy – in this case eye specialists. We wait to hear how the first week at school has gone…
