The Proof of the Pudding…

‘The proof of the pudding is in the eating’  – so the old saying goes. When the family come round for a meal Rachel will often say ‘any pudding requests?’ Last time the request was ‘strawberry and cream sponge or banoffee pie, please.

Pudding arrived. ‘That looks nice,’ said Emily. It did. The proof of the pudding was in the eating. There was no disappointment.

We’ve been watching the Olympics – the world’s best competing on the track, in the gym, in the pool…There’s talk about ‘the favourite for this event’, ‘training schedules’, ‘reigning champion’, But will they win?

Yesterday GB got gold medals in trampolining, show jumping and rowing. The peak of human achievement! The proof of the pudding is in the medals…

Yesterday I read about burying a sausage the night before your wedding day to keep the rain away…

‘My sister did this the day before her wedding and she had great weather for her wedding…’

‘We were forecast torrential rain ALL DAY on my wedding day, four family members buried a sausage and when I woke the next morning it rained for two hours and stopped 11am and was sunny!’

Some old wives tale? The proof of the pudding is in the weather.

I was talking to Amy. Amy’s a research radiographer, working on cancer treatments. She was explaining the trials she has been involved with, the international collaboration, the cancers involved, the nature of the treatments.

Amy’s been working on this project for seven years and has seen encouraging results. She’s optimistic, but the proof of the pudding will be scientifically measured…

This morning I read God’s promise of guidance to his people: ‘Your own ears will hear him. Right behind you a voice will say, “This is the way you should go,” whether to the right or to the left.’

God’s guidance? The proof of the pudding… Scientifically proven? Some old wives tale? The peak of human achievement? My experience, like Rachel’s pudding, is that God never disappoints.
