Powerful Prepositions

Yesterday… watching the news…

Biden stepping down… President Joe Biden has decided to step down from the election race for the White House. There were reports on his physical frailty, his mental inconsistency, the mounting pressure that led to this decision.

Harris stepping up… Vice-President Kamala Harris has stepped up showing willingness and enthusiasm to replace him. There was speculation as to whether there would be any opposition to her leadership intentions, and differing opinions regarding her suitability.

The US stepping forward? Is Biden stepping down, Harris stepping up a good thing and positive progress? Is this a step forward for the Democratic Party and for US politics?

Yesterday… reading about church…

Churches doing to… I was brought up to go to church. At church I was taught well and became part of a church family. I invited others to come to church, to experience the good things that church did to me.

Churches doing for… I’ve always been part of a church that has served its local community, doing things for others – parent and toddler groups, children’s holiday clubs, addicts’ twelve-step programmes, foodbanks, community cafes…

Churches doing with… I’m increasingly persuaded that the church is to journey with people, listening, learning together. Jesus, the ‘Word made flesh’ who ‘dwelt among us’ lived alongside the ordinary people he met each day.

This morning… musing on my response…

Looking in… on myself, seeking to be honest and balanced about my failures and successes, my responsibilities and needs, my gifts and handicaps… my opportunities to step back, step up, step forward…

Looking up… to my God, the power that’s greater than me, the one who’s guided me safely up to today, my shepherd, father, friend… source of wisdom, love, hope… the one through whom I do to, for and with others…

Looking out… seeing friends with their different needs – health issues, family challenges, unresolved and apparently unresolvable problems. I reflect on the Jesus the servant, my example, and what it is to follow in his footsteps.

  1. Malcolm, I love reading your musings. My heart, head, and soul nod to everything you write! Our world is interesting (to say the least!). It’s a “watch and wait” or “wait and see”. The church thoughts–I’m with you! Amen! Call me old-fashioned, but today I took food to my neighbors and visited my 87-year-old neighbor (a former pastor). I’m not bragging. But I have a choice each day to decide how I want to be the hands and feet of Jesus. Some days, I’m not able to do much. In a world gone mad via a TV, phone, or computer screen, reaching out to those in my area with my heart and hands full is the best shot of love I receive!

  2. Yes, Karla! Faith used to be about what I believed, and getting it right. It still is, but it’s increasingly about how that belief works out in practice for me in may life today – and how that fits in with those around me. On a good day , that’s an exciting adventure; on a not-so-good day it’s an encouraging reassurance.
