Last night we watched ‘Kipps – the new Half a Sixpence musical’. Based on the H.G. Wells novel, it’s a classic rags-to-riches story about class differences… Arthur Kipps, a poor orphan, is raised by his aged aunt and uncle. He leaves them, and his childhood sweetheart, Ann, to become a draper’s assistant…
Arthur unexpectedly inherits a fortune. Finding himself in high society he’s swept off his feet by the beautiful Helen. They get engaged, but Arthur finds it difficult to adapt to this new and very different way of life.
Arthur has a choice to make between two women, and two ways of life. How does he make the right choice? What is Arthur’s right choice?

Mark arrived home one evening. Jane, his wife, about to prepare their evening meal, asked, ‘What do you fancy for tea tonight?’
‘Shepherds’ Pie would be nice,’ Mark replied. ‘We haven’t got any mince,’ said Jane.
‘How about a steak pie?’ suggested Mark. ‘No. That’s for tomorrow.’
‘I like sausages – we’ve got some…’ ‘We’re going to our daughters at the weekend – we’ll have sausages then.’
Mark’s growing confusion and frustration was interrupted. ‘I was thinking we could have those pork slices in the freezer,’ Jane suggested.
‘If that’s the right choice, then why did you ask me in the first place!?’
By the time Mark told me the story he’d calmed down and could see the funny side of it!

Psalm 1 is about a man who makes good choices in the company he keeps, the way he spends his time, and the things he focuses his mind on. This man, we’re told is like a tree that’s planted by streams of water that is secure, healthy, and fruitful.
As the old song says, ‘Like a tree that’s planted by the water-side, we shall not be moved.’
Musing… Good choices… the right marriage partner, the right life style, the right meal, the right friends… the best place to plant my life-tree to be secure, healthy and fruitful.

Sometimes a spouse just needs to think outloud!

I understand that, Joy. So does Mark. Mark and Jane (not their real names!) are good friends.
