Colours of Day

Colours of day dawn into the mind,
The sun has come up, the night is behind.
Go down in the city, into the street,
And let’s give the message to the people we meet.

So light up the fire and let the flame burn,
Open the door, let Jesus return.
Take seeds of His Spirit, let the fruit grow,
Tell the people of Jesus, let His love show.

Go through the park, on into the town;
The sun still shines on, it never goes down.
The light of the world is risen again;
The people of darkness are needing a friend.

So light up the fire and let the flame burn,
Open the door, let Jesus return.
Take seeds of His Spirit, let the fruit grow,
Tell the people of Jesus, let His love show.

Open your eyes, look into the sky,
The darkness has come, the Son came to die.
The evening draws on, the sun disappears,
But Jesus is living, His Spirit is near.

So light up the fire and let the flame burn,
Open the door, let Jesus return.
Take seeds of His Spirit, let the fruit grow,
Tell the people of Jesus, let His love show.

In 1972 this was a minor hit for ‘Parchment’. I remember watching them singing it. In subsequent years it became a popular school assembly song…

It’s a song about sharing and expressing faith in the ordinary world of cities and streets, parks and towns, sunshine and darkness…

It’s a song about Jesus – unashamedly Jesus. Jesus who came as light to a dark world, Jesus who died but is still living, Jesus who promised to return.

Above all it’s about the people of Jesus, through whom Jesus’ light still shines and flame still burns. It’s as the Spirit of Jesus grows and is seen in His people, that His love and light return to our neighbourhoods.

My prayer today is… that my light will shine and my flame will burn… that Jesus’ Spirit, and love is growing and visible in my life… that I will be seen to be one of the people of Jesus… that through me, and other people of Jesus, He will return to my street and town.
