No Amount is Enough

Yesterday I was entertained by my friend Tim’s rant about the creme eggs costing £1. I was still having the odd chuckle when I discovered a story about creme eggs – on page 3 in The Sun.

Under the predictable headlines ‘Living the Creme’ and ‘Eggsclusive’… creme egg superfan Zara Winstanley was reported to eat 50 every month and spend £100s every year.

Zara said she’d eaten about 100 this year and has spent about £70… 70p each… so cheaper than Tim’s ‘outrageous pound’!

She stocks up to see her through the summer months when they’re not sold: ‘It’s devastating they’re not available all year round’.

She concluded ‘No amount is enough’

Musing…

…Bad ‘No amount is enough’… friends I’ve known with addictions – drugs, gambling, alcohol, porn, on-line shopping… hurt that leads to a desire for revenge or punishment… guilt that leads to self-inflicted punishment…

…Neutral ‘No amount is enough’… that part of life that takes over – work, study, sleep… the hobby that consumes every waking moment – exercise, pets, church… binge-watched TV series, exotic holidays…

…Positive ‘No amount is enough’… A mother’s love for her child, Jesus’ instruction to forgive ‘seventy times seven’ times, attempts to make peace in continuing conflict, hope when all appears hope-less…

Yesterday I read Churchill’s famous parliamentary speech from June 1940 that concludes:

‘…we shall not flag or fail. We shall go on to the end, we shall fight in France, we shall fight on the seas and oceans, we shall fight with growing confidence and growing strength in the air, we shall defend our Island, whatever the cost may be, we shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills; we shall never surrender…’

Loyalty, courage, determination… no amount is enough…

Final musing… Jesus’ words ‘Where your treasure is there your heart will be also’. Perhaps my ‘no amount is enough’ describes the location of my treasure and my heart.

  1. Very insightful piece. 👏
May we strive to be moderate in all things and to avoid excesses. Even too much love can lead to obsession.

    1. ‘Moderation’ raises interesting questions, Heidi-Marie… Would you want a surgeon to be moderate in his removal of a cancer; if you were an alcoholic, would you want a moderate recovery; if a child needs their parent’s love and support, should they give it in moderation? I don’t think it’s always straightforward…
