Take It or Leave It?

Elspeth wanted to give her daughter, Marie, an owl box for Christmas. Jerry looked up how to make one and made it for her at Men’s Shed. It’s now installed. It’s up to Marie’s owls whether they use it. They can take it or leave it.

We spent yesterday with our friends Tim and Jill. Walking through the (still very muddy) woods we were pleased to see and hear a number of birds – especially a nuthatch, tree creeper, and heron. In between whiles we enjoyed coffee, lunch and tea in a friendly café.

Tim was outraged that Cadburys Crème Eggs were £1! We enjoyed a predictable but entertaining rant. ‘I can remember when they only cost…! It’s scandalous that…! I’m sure they’re smaller than…!’

Take it or leave it? Tim left them.

On May 13, 1940, Churchill made his first Parliamentary speech as war-time Prime Minister:

‘…I have nothing to offer but blood, toil, tears and sweat… We have before us many, many long months of struggle and suffering. You ask, what is our policy? I say it is to wage war, by sea land and air, with all our might and with all the strength that God can give us; to wage war against a monstrous tyranny, never surpassed in this dark, lamentable catalogue of human crime…’

Take it or leave it? Parliament cautiously accepted; the public enthusiastically supported.

Moses is dying. He’s handing over Israelite leadership to Joshua. They’re about to enter their Promised Land…

‘See, I set before you today life and prosperity, death and destruction. For I command you today to love the Lord your God, to walk in obedience to him, and to keep his commands, decrees and laws; then you will live and increase, and the Lord your God will bless you in the land you are entering to possess.’

Take it or leave it.

I’m musing on choices… Marie’s owls, Tim’s crème eggs, Chuchill’s blood, toil, tears and sweat, Moses’ life and death…
