Please, Sir, I Want Some More

Oliver’s in the workhouse restricted to three small bowlfuls of gruel each day:

‘Child as he was, he was desperate with hunger, and reckless with misery. He rose from the table; and advancing to the master, basin and spoon in hand, said, somewhat alarmed at his own temerity:

“Please, sir, I want some more.”

The master was a fat, healthy man; but he turned very pale. He gazed in stupefied astonishment on the small rebel for some seconds, and then clung for support to the copper. The assistants were paralysed with wonder; the boys with fear.

“What!” said the master at length, in a faint voice.

“Please, sir,” replied Oliver, “I want some more.”’

We went to the football on Saturday. It was a good game; we won 4-1. Norwich fans went away happy, but wanting more. ‘We should have scored more goals… We need more wins… We need more of the same next Saturday…’

One good game isn’t enough. Please, sir, I want some more.

Yesterday was good. Morning church was good. We were invited out for lunch – good company, good food, good catching-up. A good walk along the sea front led to an unexpected encounter and a good conversation. In the evening, together with a few friends, we enjoyed more good food, conversation and laughter…

I’m exceedingly grateful for a good yesterday… But please, sir, I want some more, a good today, tomorrow, this week…

Our Lent reading this morning was Isaiah 25:

‘…You have been a refuge for the poor, a refuge for the needy in their distress…’

‘…the Lord Almighty will prepare a feast of rich food for all peoples, a banquet of aged wine – the best of meats and the finest of wines…’

‘…He will swallow up death for ever. The Sovereign Lord will wipe away the tears from all faces…’

The prophet’s talking about justice for the oppressed, food for the hungry, comfort and relief for the suffering. Please, sir, I want some more.

  1. Our son was quite young when he quoted that line at the supper table while holding out his plate for another helping. We seem to always want more which is why the “wait…there’s more” line seems to work well in sales.

  2. I watched the movie “Oliver” decades ago, but I’ll never forget Oliver’s line, “Please, Sir, I want some more.” I’ve parroted it many times through the years but, praise God, not out of need. 🙂
