Moseying

Moseying: walk or move in a leisurely manner.

As a child I watched American cowboy films. The good cowboy comes into town, wearing his white hat, chewing his bit of straw, just moseying around…

I‘ve had several conversations this week with other ‘senior citizens’ about getting older, slowing down – physically and mentally… walking and moving in a more leisurely manner… moseying.

Yesterday I read that the word might have originated from the story of Moses. He led the Jewish nation, wandering in the desert for forty years… walking, moving in a leisurely manner. Moses started moseying when he was eighty…

Moseying with people…

Moses didn’t mosey alone. He moseyed across the desert with a whole nation, supported by friends and family throughout the journey.

On Monday I visited Dave in a care home. He used to live alone. He had significant medical problems and had problems coping with life. Now he’s happy and well cared for.

Dave walks with a frame; Dave’s a moseyer. He’s OK because he’s moseying with others.

Moseying with persistence…

Moses kept moseying through the desert for forty years. There were many problems and setbacks. Frequently Moses just had to grit his teeth and mosey on.

I was chatting to Steve. Steve’s an enthusiastic runner. Running through the woods he tripped and fell, cracking several ribs. He’s still in some pain but his back running again.

Steve’s speed is far from moseying, but he is certainly showing persistence.

Moseying with purpose…

Moses kept moseying because they were moseying to their Promised Land, a ‘land flowing with milk and honey’, that their God had promised them.

John and Carlton, are decorating our hall, stairs and landing. The house is upside-down. John and Carlton are careful, but not leisurely… We know that by the end of next week everything will be new, fresh and bright.

I’m moseying in hope. Whatever mess I’m in now I know there’s something better, promised by my God, new, fresh and bright. My moseying destination.

  1. I mosey through the woods. It’s the only way to really see things that would otherwise be unnoticed. It also does not bother wildlife. One can mosey fairly close to deer who are very alert to uncommon movement and motion. Some would say that is “sneaky”
