High Tides, Strong Winds, and Erosion Damage

High tides, strong winds and erosion damage have been in the news. National news has focused on parts of the Norfolk coast; we’ve had our local share of concern and drama…The BBC reported:

‘The unexpected collapse of a cliff edge and a road has forced the evacuation of a caravan park as well as revealing a suspected unexploded bomb.

High tides and wind caused a road to collapse at Pakefield Holiday Park in Lowestoft, Suffolk, leaving caravans “dangerously close to the edge”.

Later a suspected unexploded device was found at the base of a cliff a few hundred metres away…’

Yesterday a social worker was telling me about a young boy who was rejected my his mother; his wider family cared for him, but then decided they didn’t want him; a foster placement didn’t work out so he was returned to his mother; her mental health issues resulted in him being put into foster care again…

He’s now a sixteen-year-old, trying to live independently. In his short life he’s experienced high tides and strong winds, and suffered erosion damage.

Later I was chatting to a friend whose marriage had ended after forty-six years… I attended a funeral… I watched the return of hostages and the plight of ordinary people in Gaza… Folks experiencing personal high tides, strong winds and erosion damage.

Musing…

Beauty… Our friend Ann posted: ‘Double rainbow. Quite sad to see the impact of the high tides further up the beach but this pool made the perfect reflection of the beach huts, a double rainbow without getting wet!’

Alongside high tides and destruction there’s also great beauty.

Believe… Remembering the line ‘I believe above the storm the smallest prayer will still be heard.’

In the strongest of winds ‘I believe that someone in the great somewhere hears every word.’

Building… This morning I read: ‘Every house is built by someone, but God is the builder of everything.’

Despite erosion and destruction I can also reflect on building and construction.

  1. Good one. I almost skipped the song. So glad that I didn’t. Great reminder, especially this time of year when we tend to forget what it really is we say that we’re celebrating.
