No more talk of darkness,
Forget these wide-eyed fears
I’m here, nothing can harm you
my words will warm and calm you
Let me be your freedom,
let daylight dry your tears.
I’m here with you, beside you,
to guard you and to guide you…
This song from Phantom of the Opera has been in my head this last couple of days
Say you love me every waking moment,
turn my head with talk of summertime…
Say you need me with you now and always…
Promise me that all you say is true
that’s all I ask of you
There’s daily international news of darkness and fear, war, tragedy and corruption; I share life with friends experiencing personal pain, bereavement and despair; we all need freedom, light, peace, protection and safety.
Let me be your shelter
let me be your light
You’re safe, No one will find you
your fears are far behind you…
All I want is freedom,
a world with no more night
and you, always beside me, to hold me and to hide me…
The song reminds us that the answer is love. It’s not getting even, getting what I deserve or demanding my rights, it’s not about ignoring, debating or deflecting responsibility. It’s about giving love selflessly, sacrificially; it’s about receiving love – allowing myself to be vulnerable.
Then say you’ll share with me
one love, one lifetime
let me lead you from your solitude
Say you need me with you here, beside you…
anywhere you go, let me go too
that’s all I ask of you…
This morning I’ve read: ’Follow God’s example, therefore, as dearly loved children and live a life of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us…’
My faith points me to Jesus, who taught and lived love, who shared a giving, vulnerable, sacrificial love. I pause; I remember that I’m called to love my God and those around me. The call is ‘Love me – that’s all I ask of you’… loving asks all of me to love all of you…
Say you’ll share with me one love, one lifetime…
say the word and I will follow you…
Share each day with me,
each night, each morning…
Say you love me… you know I do
Love me – that’s all I ask of you
Anywhere you go let me go too
Love me – that’s all I ask of you…

The Beatles said it best: “Love is all you need!” 🙂

The song is absolutely amazing (has always pulled at my heart strings!), but what an equally amazing performance by these two!! Wow!!

I agree, Nigel. It’s a good song as a stand- alone song and in the context of Phantom. And Mat and Savannah Shaw never disappoint!

I agree Nancy. there was a line something like that in the original, but it got cut in the edit. And if Phantom, The Beatles and Jesus say the same thing it must be worth taking seriously!!

The question is, “Why aren’t more people getting it?” 🙂

I had a “dark night of the soul” this past week. https://themjkxn.substack.com/p/i-despaired-of-life-itself But thank God, I awoke the next morning to the Resurrection of Jesus Christ that I wrote about today on this beautiful Sunday morning. https://themjkxn.substack.com/p/long-live-god
