I Will Carry You

Sometimes I wonder if my beating heart has a reason
The thought of breathing only takes my breath away
I’ve spent so many nights wrestling with this feeling
Do I have the strength to make it through the day

But I was never meant
To walk this road alone
I can always trust you
When you say

This Michael W Smith song recognises that life is tough; our burdens can be heavy. It reflects my feelings of weakness, alone-ness; my secret anxieties and fears

I listen. It brings the picture of Jesus travelling life’s journey with me, carrying me when I’m weak… the shepherd carrying the lamb, the single set of footprints in the sand. I understand that picture with gratitude – the God who carries me through tough times

And I will carry you
Be your strength and pull you through
Reach for me and take my hand
We will pray and we will stand
In a world crying out for peace
Let your heart be strong
For when I am weak
You will carry me

I listen again. I’m doing the carrying. As a Jesus-follower I’m the one carrying those travelling with me, those struggling and straggling. It’s a tough call, but with God’s direction and strength I’m intentionally available… aware, sensitive, caring… carrying.

Sometimes you wonder if the road you’re on has a reason
It’s hard to go on, when you just don’t know
We can shoulder all the weight of life between us
Until the fear of what we cannot see is gone,

We were never meant
To walk this road alone…

I listen again… I’m allowing my travelling companions to carry me. Having the honesty to confess my own fears and inadequacies to them is difficult; having the humility to allow independent, proud, self-sufficient, stubborn old me to be carried is a lesson I’m still learning – badly!

And I will carry you
Be your strength and pull you through…

…For when I am weak
You will carry me.

  1. I’m preaching on this very text this morning! Take a look on YouTube at Kevin Sinfield carrying his friend Rob Burrow over the finishing line of the Leeds Marathon. That’s Grace! It’s the same thing with ‘Hopeful’ helping Christian negotiate the River of Faith in Pilgrim’s Progress! It’s all about grace. Paul understood grace because he’d been transported to Paradise, which is all about grace! May you learn more about God’s grace today and everyday. Just remember you’re being carried!!

  2. Thanks Peter. Allan mentioned your preaching… I hope you feel it went OK. The Kevin Sinfield and John Bunyan examples are both good illustrations. My problem with being carried is that I’m no longer in control!
