Four recent deaths…

Tony Bennett sung many memorable duets… Frank Sinatra, Judy Garland… Amy Winehouse, Lady Gaga… I remember him singing ‘I left my heart in San Francisco’…
Sir Elton John said: ‘So sad to hear of Tony’s passing. Without doubt the classiest singer, man, and performer you will ever see.’

Trevor Francis will be remembered as Britain’s first £1m footballer when he transferred to Brian Clough’s Nottingham Forest that won two European cups. He played for England before embarking on a managerial career…
Football presenter Gary Lineker, who also played for England, tweeted: ‘Deeply saddened to hear that Trevor Francis has died. A wonderful footballer and lovely man.’

Vince Hill sung on many TV variety shows in the 60s. I remember him singing the Sound of Music’s ‘Edelweiss’. He was a famous, well-respected singer.
Lyricist Sir Tim Rice said: ‘Very sad to hear Vince Hill has died. Top ballad singer – impeccable phrasing & tone. Lovely fellow.’
Three famous, good men… skilful, successful… respected, remembered with fondness.

George Alagiah, BBC newsreader and reporter, received many tributes lovingly paid…
Fellow correspondent John Simpson said: ‘A gentler, kinder, more insightful and braver friend and colleague it would be hard to find.’
BBC director general Tim Davie said: ‘George was one of the best and bravest journalists of his generation who reported fearlessly from across the world… audiences could sense his kindness, empathy and wonderful humanity.’
I was saddened by the first three deaths; Alagiah’s moved me… identifying with the poor and suffering… thoughtful and caring when reporting on war and riots…

This morning I read Jesus’ words: ‘Whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant.’
On Sunday, Ray, preaching on ‘The importance of serving’, said: ‘We can’t serve unless we know what a servant looks like.’
George Alagiah was that true servant… serving those he was reporting on with empathy and understanding… serving those he worked alongside with kindness and generosity… serving us, his audience, with honesty and integrity.
