Being Me…

Confusion…

On Saturday we went to London, to Shakespeare’s ‘Globe Theatre’ – the original 1599 theatre was rescued in the 1990s… We saw ‘Comedy of Errors’ – a Shakespeare play that we’d not seen before…

Two identical twins – both called Antipholus – were separated at birth. They each have a servant – both called Dromio – also identical twins, separated at birth.

There’s a ridiculous plot, slapstick fights and chases… supposed madness, involvement of supernatural forces… false accusations, mistaken identity…

Being Me… Not knowing who I am may bring comedy; there’s certainly confusion.

Comparison…

At church yesterday Ben preached on ‘The Power of Comparison’… the dangers of social media – comparing our lives with others – our appearance, achievements, image, family…

Adverts encourage us to want newer, better… cars, houses, holidays… We listen to those struggling with the cost of living… those going on strike for more pay… comparing themselves to others.

Being me… Comparing and contrasting myself to others can be dangerous…

Consistency…

We watched Elton John performing to a huge crowd at Glastonbury last night (on TV!)… two hours of his greatest hits… his last UK performance… finishing with ‘Rocket Man’:

And I think it’s gonna be a long, long time
‘Till touch down brings me ’round again to find
I’m not the man they think I am at home
Oh no, no, no – I’m a rocket man…

I hope and pray that ‘the man they think I am at home’ is the same man as I am at church, with my friends, at our Men’s Shed…

Being me… I need the confidence to be consistent.

Contentment…

‘Comedy of Errors’ reminds us… there can only be resolution and contentment when everybody knows who everybody is…

Elton John’s a successful, talented, famous musician… I don’t know if he’s content…

Ben talked about the discontent that comes through self-pity and self-centred pride, reminding us of St Paul’s wise words: ‘I have learnt the secret of being content whatever the circumstances.’

Being me… I pray for this contentment.
