This Is Amazing Grace

Who breaks the power of sin and darkness?
Whose love is mighty and so much stronger?
The King of glory, the King above all kings

Who shakes the whole earth with holy thunder?
And leaves us breathless in awe and wonder?
The King of glory, the King above all kings

This morning I shall go to church. I shall sing – perhaps this song… I shall reflect, pray,  worship… The great God – King of glory, strength and love… the Jesus of ‘amazing grace’ who dies ‘bearing my cross’.

I shall remember the God who brings order and peace to my life. I shall look round at my Christian friends who come as sons and daughters of the King, sharing my faith, hope and experience.

Who brings our chaos back into order?
Who makes the orphans a son and daughter?
The King of glory, the King of glory
Who rules the nations with truth and justice
Shines like the sun in all of its brilliance
The King of glory, the King above all kings

Joshua has led Israel and been faithful to his God for many years. He assembles the people and gives them a history lesson… Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Moses… leaving Egypt, desert journey, Promised Land… battles, victories…

He presents them with the choice. Follow and serve this God of history… or don’t. Joshua says that his family will ‘serve the Lord’…

This morning, singing of ‘amazing grace’ I join Joshua saying ‘I will serve the Lord’.

This is amazing grace
This is unfailing love
That You would take my place
That You would bear my cross

You laid down Your life
That I would be set free
Oh, Jesus, I sing for
All that You’ve done for me

Joshua dies with the epitaph ‘Israel served the Lord throughout the lifetime of Joshua’. I’ve sung of my God’s ‘amazing grace’ throughout my lifetime. He’s always been faithful to me. I pray that my epitaph will point to my faithfulness to him.
