Meekness and Majesty

I’m pleased but humbled to return to Graham Kendrick’s genius lyrics that point me again to the mystery of the meek but majestic life-transforming Jesus…

Meekness and majesty manhood and deity
In perfect harmony the Man who is God
Lord of eternity dwells in humanity
Kneels in humility and washes our feet

My faith is built around Jesus, the majestic eternal God of humanity and humility who continues to fascinate, attract and inspire me. I can discuss theology – grace, salvation, redemption… but it’s the life, teaching and example of Jesus who I return to.

I’ve been thinking about leadership this week… national leadership – Putin, Biden, Johnson… 1984 and Big Brother… what a good church leader looks like. I return to the humble foot-washing leader who calls those who would follow him to be foot-washers too in character and action…

Father’s pure radiance perfect in innocence
Yet learns obedience to death on a cross
Suffering to give us life
Conquering through sacrifice
And as they crucify prays Father forgive

Somehow understanding the mystery of Jesus finds a focus in his crucifixion. In my questions about life and death I return to the innocent suffering servant, who dies in innocence, identifying with and redeeming the worst of humanity,

Wisdom unsearchable God the invisible
Love indestructible in frailty appears
Lord of infinity stooping so tenderly
Lifts our humanity to the heights of His throne

I return to a love that’s fragile and vulnerable, that brings forgiveness from a position of weakness. This love changes my life because it isn’t some theory of goodness but a transforming force that changes my life, my attitudes and relationships.

Martin Luther King said: ‘Love is the only force capable of transforming an enemy into a friend. We can never get rid of an enemy by meeting hate with hate; we get rid of an enemy by getting rid of enmity.’

O what a mystery meekness and majesty
Bow down and worship for this is your God
