The Unnoticed, The Hidden, The Secret

On Wednesday at Men’s Shed we were chatting in the garden. Kenny was talking about the pond, Mick about the bee hives, Keith about who would eat the ripening strawberries… Chris asked: ‘Have you seen the weevils on the carnations?’

None of us had. We looked… beautiful shiny black and yellow, ladybird sized insects. Chris had noticed them, photographed them, identified them. They weren’t hidden – just unnoticed by all except Chris.

This morning’s paper tells of a shipwreck off the coast of Great Yarmouth. Discovered in 2007,  it’s now public. ‘The Gloucester’ was sailing to Edinburgh in 1682 when it hit a sandbank and sank.

Around 250 people were drowned. James Stuart, Duke of York, later James II, was saved. It’s claimed to be the most significant historical maritime discovery since the raising of the Mary Rose in 1982. For hundreds of years The Gloucester has been unnoticed and hidden…

Yesterday, driving down the A12 towards Ipswich, we passed a sign: ‘Grundisburgh Secret Gardens’. We spent an entertaining but pointless 5 minutes discussing the sign…

‘How could we find the gardens if they were secret?’… ‘If we found the gardens would they still be secret?’… ‘How many people would need to find a secret garden before it stops being secret?’…’Would the signs then need to change to ‘Grundisburgh no-longer-secret gardens’?

Musing…

…Jesus, to his Father God: ‘…you have hidden these things from the wise and learned and revealed them to little children.’ (Matthew 11:25)… Jesus’ concern for the unnoticed… their understanding of truth hidden from the wise…

Jesus’ story: ‘The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field. When a man found it, he hid it again, and then in his joy went and sold all he had and bought that field.’ (Matthew 13:44)… Unnoticed, hidden treasure…

…St Paul’s words: ‘…God’s secret wisdom, a wisdom than has been hidden.’ (1 Corinthians 2:7)…  Recent conversations, particularly about suffering… God’s wisdom appears beyond us… we don’t understand the apparently hidden…
