Divided Opinion?

Today’s news is dominated by ‘Partygate’ – the Downing Street birthday party in breach of lockdown rules… Boris Johnson, his wife Carrie and chancellor Rishi Sunak have all been fined.

Opinion’s divided. Some are angry: ‘The people who were making the rules were breaking the rules!’ Others say: ‘With everything that’s going on in the world it’s very trivial.’

Tonight’s television documentary about footballer Paul Gascoine is reviewed in the paper: ‘Gazza’s rise to fame… and his decline into addiction… Former England manager Bobby Robson famously described him as ‘daft as a brush’, while Gary Lineker has said he is ‘the most naturally gifted technical footballer that I played with…’

Gazza certainly divided opinion…

Yesterday I read about Brooklyn Beckham’s wedding costing 15 million pounds… ‘It’s a waste of money’… ‘If they’ve got the money then spend it’… ‘I don’t care’…

Divided opinion…

It’s the Wednesday before Easter, two days before Jesus’ death…

In Bethany, in Simon’s house, Jesus sat at the supper table with his disciples. Mary anointed Jesus’ head and feet with expensive perfume, showing her love and devotion…

Indignant disciples said: ‘Why wasn’t the perfume sold and the money given to the poor?’

Judas went to the Sanhedrin to betray Jesus for money…

Divided opinions.

Yesterday we went for a walk that finished at a café. Tea or coffee? Americano or latte? Scone or shortbread? Victoria sponge or coffee cake? I couldn’t sit on the fence – I had to make a decision.

Today’s 13th April. It’s the 280th anniversary of the premiere of Handel’s ‘Messiah’ – in Dublin.

Handel’s grave, at Westminster Abbey, is marked by a statue of him. There’s a score of Messiah on the table opened to the page ‘I Know That My Redeemer Liveth.’

Musing on the Easter story… ‘I know that my redeemer liveth, and that he shall stand at the latter day, upon the earth…’ My opinion isn’t divided.

And I chose a flat white coffee – and a chocolate and hazelnut crunch…
