Bridge over Troubled Water

Like a bridge over troubled water
I will lay me down

This last week we’ve seen much troubled water… guns, bombs, destruction… anxious families leaving home, seeking safety… fear-full, insecure, uncertain, victims of war…

We need national leaders seeking peace not war… justice and reconciliation, not death and destruction.

Our world needs a Bridge Over Troubled Water

When you’re weary, feeling small
When tears are in your eyes I will dry them all
I’m on your side, oh when time gets rough
And friends just can’t be found

We live in communities in which we’re encouraged to stand up for and look after ourselves… independent, self-centred people, building walls of self-preservation, self-protection.

We need to see the tearful eye, friendless neighbours going through rough times…. compassionate advocates who build bridges not walls…

Our communities need a Bridge Over Troubled Water

When you’re down and out, when you’re on the streets
When evening falls so hard, I will comfort you
I’ll take your part, oh when darkness comes
And pain is all around

I come with my own needs, opinions and agenda… my insecurities and hang-ups. I want an easy life…

… I notice that this is a song of resolve and commitment – ’I will lay me down’… I will to look beyond myself… ‘I will comfort you’  I will support those in darkness and pain…

I need to be a Bridge over Troubled Water

Sail on, silver girl, sail on by
Your time has come to shine, all your dreams are on their way
See how they shine, oh if you need a friend
I’m sailing right behind

I choose to do this because I’m inspired by the God who created calm and troubled water… following the example of the Jesus who calmed the storm saying: ‘Peace, Be still’… empowered and enabled by God’s Spirit of ‘Love, joy peace’…

The God who is a Bridge Over Troubled Water.

Like a bridge over troubled water
I will lay me down.
