Moving On

Colin’s Cake

Like a long lonely stream
I keep running towards a dream
Moving on, moving on

My friend Colin, a cat lover, has recently moved. After living in Lowestoft for many years he’s moved to Uttoxeter – delighted to be closer to his family. He writes:

‘A colleague made my leaving cake. Lemon and ginger with crunchy topping, chocolate cat poo in an actual litter tray with scoop and cat.’

We can only guess what his colleagues thought of him!

Musing on this old Stevie Wonder song…

Like an old dusty road
I get weary from the load
Moving on, moving on

Yesterday I was musing on unanswered ‘why?’ questions.

I chatted to Darren. When he left school he wanted to be a painter and decorator. He started his training. Coming down a ladder one day he had an epileptic fit. Unable to continue his training he had to move on… working very happily for many years at his local market…

Many of us have unanswered ‘why’ questions – the life-limiting disability, the family member whose poor choice changed their life , the terminal cancer, the ruined career…

Somehow we have to accept these unanswered questions and move on.

There’s a place in the sun
Where there’s hope for everyone
Where my poor restless heart’s gotta run

Some want a literal ‘place in the sun’ – a foreign holiday, moving on from the ‘tired troubled earth’ of the pandemic. Colin has moved closer to his family; Darren found happiness and security in his job

Musing on Job’s determination as he said through gritted teeth: ‘Though he (God) slay me, yet I will hope in him.’ (13:15)

…and Isaiah: ‘Those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.’ (40:31)

Isaiah knew how to move on; he’d found his hope, his place in the sun.
