One of my favourite Eagles songs….
City girls just seem to find out early
How to open doors with just a smile.
A rich old man and she won’t have to worry
She’ll dress up all in lace go in style.
In Los Angeles The Eagles saw many beautiful Hollywood women married to middle-aged wealthy, successful men…
This song tells of a girl who marries a richer older man, but loves a younger poor boy. She has an affair with him…
The lie that riches and possessions bring security and happiness leads to further lies from unfaithfulness in her marriage.
So she tells him she must go out for the evening
To comfort an old friend who’s feelin’ down
But he knows where she’s goin’ as she’s leavin’
She is headed for the cheatin’ side of town
Lies are accepted… Stories of Donald Trump from America; the current disagreement between Alex Salmond and Nicola Sturgeon in Scotland; politicians who avoid answering the question so that they avoid telling the truth…
Our politicians reflect our society, where the truth is questioned, ignored, avoided, disguised and denied. Fake news, and fake truth leads to real lies.
She gets up and pours herself a strong one
And stares out at the stars up in the sky
Another night it’s gonna be a long one
She draws the shade and hangs her head to cry
Musing… Jesus declared himself to be ‘The Truth’. He spoke against lies… material wealth brings happiness… cheating in marriage… powerful politicians…
His strongest words were against the lies of religious hypocrites. Wearing a mask of clean respectability, they were ‘whitewashed tombs’. Claiming to believe truth they didn’t live it.
I’m challenged…. Lying eyes and hearts can’t be hidden.
You can’t hide your lyin’ eyes
And your smile is a thin disguise
I thought by now you’d realize
There ain’t no way to hide your lyin’ eyes.
At Capernwray in 1975 one of the guys in our ’dorm’ was a great Eagles fan. He was always playing guitar and singing their songs. I used to like to listen. Scary to think that that was 46 years ago!! Ouch!
